The Mummy is an American fantasy action-adventure movie from 2017 that was written, produced, and directed by Alex Kurtzman. It was also written by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie, and Dylan Kussman. Tom Cruise plays U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton in this reimagining of the Mummy series, which was intended to be a part of Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe. Morton is a soldier of fortune who unintentionally discovers the ancient tomb of the imprisoned Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella). Along with Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and others star.
The Mummy had its world premiere on May 22, 2017, at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia. On June 9, 2017, it received a theatrical release in the US. It received primarily unfavorable reviews from reviewers, made $410 million globally, lost as much as $95 million because to exorbitant production and marketing expenditures, and was a commercial failure. The film’s underwhelming box office performance caused the initial suspension and termination of the Dark Universe, an effort to build a contemporary cinematic universe based on the legendary Universal Monsters film series.
